Newsletter Formatting Tips
We have noticed that many ezines have a problem with their
ezine formatting. The largest problem here is proper line wrapping.
According to RFC standards, line length in email messages should not
exceed 72 characters.
If your message has lines longer than 72 chars, it may result
into:
1. Delivery problems. Some email servers do not accept
email messages that don't comply with the RFC standards.
2. Reading problems. Most email clients auto-wrap plain
text messages, but some may not. And it becomes even worse as soon as
your message is automatically converted to HTML by our system.
We saw two solutions for this problem: 1) enable forced line
wrapping in our mailing software (whew... this could make some
messages look real bad) or 2) work closer with our publishers and
help them format their ezines correctly.
We assumed that a proper text editing tool combined with a set
of tips on how to use it would do the job. The largest problem was to
find a free tool, that would meet our requirements...
Anyway, it looks like we found something...
ConTEXT
is a full-featured programmer's editor with lots of functions that you
might never use, but... it's only 1Mb in size! And it is capable of
doing the newsletter formatting job as if it has been specifically
tuned for that. If you are publishing an HTML version of your ezine,
you will also find ConTEXT helpful since it supports HTML
coloring and code templates.
We have already offered ConTEXT to some of our publishers and
received positive feedback.
Please take a look at a special page where we have described
the formatting problem and offered the tips to solve it with the help
of ConTEXT:
Formatting Your Newsletter.
We hope this will take the ezines published with Zinester to a
whole new level of quality!
